RANDOMLY CHOSEN SELCECTION BOXES

	The  following Selection Boxes were chosen at random by shuffling a deck
of 16 cards.  Between trials the deck was sorted  back  to  numerical  order  to
prevent  direct  dependence  between  consecutive  trials.  Three basic sorts of
shuffles were employed: 1) Riffle shuffles 2) a process of dealing the cards "at
random" onto from three to eigth piles in such a way that consecutive cards were
never delt to the same pile and then collecting the piles at random 3) a process
of  picking a card from the end of the deck and moving it to a "random" place in
the middle or picking cards from the middle and distributing them "at random" to
the  ends.   Each  trial  involved  about  five  to ten minutes of shuffling(the
process was done at leasure over several days) at an extimated rate  of  two  to
five  shuffles  per minute.  In spite of the care, particularly to break up runs
of consecutive cards, many runs fixed points matching parts of rows etc  appear.
A  statistical  analysis would be necessary to decide whether these are due to a
flaw in the technique or are phenomena to be expected in random data.
